Same thing if in FaceTime I select in the Video menu Scarlett 18i20 (instead of system settings) as input. When I receive a call I have to open the MBP cover and select the Mac's internal microphone so that I can be heard. In the FaceTime video settings 'Use system setting' is selected but nothing helps.

The Scarlett 18i20 is correctly selected in System Preferences / Sound as input and output. The microphone works great with Logic but I can't use it when answering a call on the MBP. I can make a call from my macbook pro with the lid closed, the microphone works, the person on the other end can hear me. however, after restarting the macbook two times, it sort of works, let me explain. I have bought an external microphone, and at first it still didn't work with the lid closed, I couldn't hear them, and they couldn't hear me on the other end. Apple care told me to buy an external mic to make this work. However, I have discovered when the lid is closed, the mic doesn't work. I do a lot of phone calls for work and I work from home, and one of the things I was looking forward to with switching from Windows to Mac was being able to make calls from the computer seamlessly from my iphone through the Mac and speak hands free without any earphones.
